Minnesota Timberwolves rookie Derrick Williams, the No. 2 overall pick in this year’s NBA draft, said he will attempt to sign with a professional team overseas if the NBA lockout does not end “within the next week or so.”

“I’m really going to be looking into it,” Williams told GoAZCats.com, a website that covers University of Arizona sports, about his intentions to play overseas if the lockout continues. “I think that’s the Plan B, especially at this point.”

NBA players might learn today if NBA commissioner David Stern follows through on plans to eliminate the first two weeks of the regular season if no significant progress is made in talks today in New York. The 2011-12 regular season is scheduled to begin Nov. 1

The owners and NBA players’ union met throughout the weekend in attempts to resolve their labor dispute and reach a new collective bargaining agreement. The league has been shut down since the owners imposed a lockout on July 1 after the previous labor agreement expired on June 30.

Training camps for all 30 teams were postponed indefinitely and the entire preseason was canceled.

Williams, a 6-foot-8 forward who starred at Arizona, has been playing exhibition games with other NBA players to stay in shape.

There were signs of an extended labor dispute before the June 23 draft, but Williams said he does not have second thoughts about leaving Arizona after his sophomore season. Williams was a projected

top-three pick when he declared for the draft.

“Everybody wants to be a top pick in the (NBA) draft, so I have no regrets about leaving,” Williams told GoAZCats.com.

Williams, the Pac-10 Conference player of the year last season, led Arizona with 19.5 points and 8.3 rebounds per game and helped the team advance to the Elite Eight of the NCAA tournament.

That’s all the news for today.
