Report: Love still in contract negotiations with…

With the contract extension deadline nearing for NBA teams, the Minnesota Timberwolves are still working to come to an agreement with star power forward Kevin Love.

One source with knowledge of the negotiations told the Star Tribune that the team has offered the All-Star a maximum contract that would pay him $78 million over five years. Another source, however, told the paper that the team hasn’t adjusted their initial four-year, $61 million offer.

If the two sides to not reach an agreement by Wednesday night’s deadline, Love can become a restricted free-agent following this season.

The 23-year-old is averaging 24.9 points and 13.9 rebounds per game for the Timberwolves this season. Last year he led the NBA by averaging 15.2 rebounds per contest.

Houston Rockets Top Minnesota Timberwolves 107-92

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Kevin Martin scored 31 points to lead the Houston Rockets to their seventh straight victory, 107-92 over Minnesota on Monday night in coach Kevin McHale’s first game back at Target Center since he was fired by the Timberwolves in 2009.

Kyle Lowry had 16 points, 10 assists and 10 rebounds and Samuel Dalembert grabbed 15 rebounds for the Rockets, who put the game away with a 19-1 run bridging the third and fourth quarters.

Kevin Love had 39 points and 12 rebounds for the Timberwolves, who committed 10 turnovers in the fourth quarter in coach Rick Adelman’s first game against the team he spent the last four seasons coaching.

Ricky Rubio had 12 assists for Minnesota, but the rookie scored just six points on 2-for-10 shooting and turned the ball over five times.

NBA: Minnesota Timberwolves wilt down stretch…

Records aside, the stats say there is probably not a dime’s worth of difference between Utah and Minnesota, two of the younger teams in the NBA.

So, with the Timberwolves playing back-to-back games and nursing a few injuries, it was up to the Jazz to exploit their advantage. That’s what they did Saturday night in EnergySolutions Arena by bumping up the tempo as well as Minnesota’s players.

The results were obvious down the stretch as Utah (10-5) pulled away for a 108-98 victory.

“You feel it in your legs, in the last four [minutes] especially,” T-Wolves (7-9) guard Ricky Rubio said. “We don’t have to complain about that. Sometimes it’s the opposite thing. We rest the day before and receive a team … that played back-to-back, and that’s how it is.”

Rubio, Minnesota’s flashy Spanish rookie point guard, pulled his team to within four points, 100-96, with about 5 1/2 minutes to play. From that point, the Wolves missed six consecutive shots — a sign of tired legs — to go with a couple of turnovers.

The Jazz weren’t great down the stretch, but played well enough to rebound from Thursday night’s disappointing loss to Dallas. Meanwhile, Minnesota had just defeated the L.A. Clippers on Friday in an energy-sapping come-from-behind effort that came down to the last shot.

“We just didn’t do enough things,” Minnesota coach Rick Adelman said. “It was a very physical game. [Utah] came out and they’re going to do a lot of grabbing and holding and bumping. We have to find a way, if not called, to play through it.”

Coming into Saturday’s game, the Timberwolves were on a three-game win streak. They played with confidence. Even when the Jazz went on a 20-8 run in the third quarter to open a 14-point lead, the Wolves attacked and cut the margin to three and eventually tied the game in the fourth period.

Story continues below

Even with a handful of players out hurt, Minnesota challenged the Jazz. There were 13 lead changes and 12 ties in the first half and seven players, led by Rubio’s 17, scored in double figures.

It all came apart in the final five minutes.

“We took them out of their sets,” said Utah’s Paul Millsap, who finished with a game-high 26 points and nine rebounds. “The effort wasn’t really there the whole game, but we turned it on in the fourth quarter.”

It was a lesson in finishing.

“I felt like we came out well,” Minnesota’s Kevin Love said. “They hit big shots and executed well. We need to bring it every single night.”

Utah Jazz-Minnesota Timberwolves: Report card

Published: Saturday, Jan. 21, 2012 11:14 p.m. MST

SALT LAKE CITY — An All-Star worthy effort from Paul Millsap helped the Utah Jazz get back on track Saturday night.

Millsap scored 26 points to lead the Jazz to a 108-98 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Jazz have momentum again after Thursday’s tough loss to Dallas, and are scoring well again on their report card.

GUARDS: Devin Harris was back in the starting lineup, and wasn’t even booed by his home crowd. That’s a plus. He played a lot better after the disaster against Dallas, but notably got fewer minutes than Earl Watson. Harris, after committing a turnover 11 seconds into the game, played well and finished with nine points on 4-for-5 shooting. Raja Bell is finding his stroke, as he went 5-for-6 and tied his season-high with 12 points. Bell again played well on defense. Ricky Rubio dazzled in his Utah debut, finishing with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Luke Ridnour hit some key shots for the Timberwolves. Give Minnesota a slight edge, but Bell and Harris did nothing to put Utah in danger of losing. Grade: B

FORWARDS: Millsap was outstanding, and outplayed Kevin Love. Millsap had one more rebound than Love, who for the first time this season did not record a double-double. He had 15 points and eight rebounds. Gordon Hayward continues to struggle shooting the ball, but is helping in other ways. He had six assists and five rebounds. Wes Johnson was tough for Minnesota, finishing with 13 points and six rebounds. Grade: A-

CENTERS: Al Jefferson was solid against his old team, finishing with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Darko Milicic had 10 points and four rebounds and disappeared in the third quarter. He did ride a mean stationary bike in the fourth quarter. Grade: A

BENCH: C.J. Miles scored in double figures for the third straight game. He’s playing aggressively on offense and sparking the second unit. Watson continues to run the offense well, as he had 10 points to go along with seven assists. Rookie Derrick Williams scored a career-high 15 points for the Timberwolves, and Wayne Ellington scored 10. Utah’s bench had the advantage though, outscoring Minnesota’s reserves 39-33. Grade: B+

COACHING: Tyrone Corbin interestingly played Harris and Watson together in the final two minutes and it seemed to be an arrangement that could work. Watson is the better facilitator and Harris is a good combo guard. He also played Watson five more minutes than Harris. He just seems to have the pulse of this team, and he had a great gameplan in slowing Love down. Grade: A

Jazz: Paul Millsap powers Utah to win over…

The Jazz’s Paul Millsap is never mentioned in discussions about the best power forwards in the NBA.

But that could change.

Maybe it should change.

Millsap capped a monstrous week against top competition Saturday night, when he outplayed U.S. Olympic team candidate Kevin Love and led the Jazz to a 108-98 victory over Minnesota.

Millsap scored 12 of his 26 points in the fourth quarter, including 10 of Utah’s 13 during a critical 41/2-minute stretch in which the Jazz finally broke away.

In four games since last Sunday — including outings against the Clippers’ Blake Griffin, the Mavericks’ Dirk Nowitzki and Love — Millsap averaged 22 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and shot 57.8 percent from the field.

“We appreciate all his efforts,” said Jazz coach Tyrone Corbin, “and the way he continues to work to get better. As a result, we’re a better team because he’s so effective on the floor.”

Asked if he takes it personally when paired against high-profile opponents like Love, Millsap paused for a moment and broke into a wide smile.

Story continues below

“Well, yeah,” he said. “But you always want to match up against the best. You always want to test yourself. Me, I’m going to take up the challenge every single time. That’s what we play for.”

For the Jazz, who improved to 10-5 this season, Al Jefferson and C.J. Miles contributed 18 points. Raja Bell added 12 as Utah won for the ninth time in 11 games.

Minnesota, which had a three-game winning streak snapped, got 17 points and 11 assists from rookie point guard Ricky Rubio.

Love managed only 15 points, however, and missed 16 of his 21 field-goal attempts. He failed to score in the final 14:03 of a winnable game.

“My main focus was with defense,” Millsap said. “I was trying to help on defense and trying to limit Kevin Love’s touches. I wasn’t really too focused on offense. It just happened.”

Millsap appeared to frustrate Love, who picked up his second technical foul of the season in the third quarter.

“I got my hand on the basketball a lot,” Millsap said. “That kind of takes a guy out of their rhythm. So he got a little frustrated. He got a technical. But I was just trying to do my job.”

Love disagreed.

Millsap scores 26 to power Jazz past Timberwolves

Paul Millsap scored 12 of his 26 points in the fourth quarter to
power the Utah Jazz past the Minnesota Timberwolves 108-98 on
Saturday night.

Matched up against Kevin Love, Millsap shot 6 of 7 in the final
period on a variety of fallaway jumpers and shots at the rim to
help the Jazz win for the ninth time in 11 games.

Ricky Rubio, who had 17 points and 11 assists, made a jumper
with 5:01 to play to cut the Jazz lead to 100-96. But Minnesota ran
out of gas one night after a dramatic win in Los Angeles against
the Clippers.

The Timberwolves missed six straight shots and had two turnovers
down the stretch as Millsap and the Jazz clinched the victory.

CJ Miles and Al Jefferson added 18 points apiece as the Jazz
shot 52 percent and outrebounded Minnesota 46-35.

As the final seconds ticked off the clock, Rubio and Luke
Ridnour ignored the action on the floor and berated the
officials.

Love had 15 points and eight rebounds, but shot 5 of 21 from the
field and was visibly frustrated at times. He committed four
turnovers and was whistled for a technical in the third
quarter.

It was a big difference from Friday night’s game when Love hit a
3-pointer at the buzzer after Rubio’s 3 tied the game with 20
seconds to play to help the Timberwolves nip the Clippers.

The Timberwolves had won three straight for the first time since
a four-game stretch from Jan. 29 to Feb. 6, 2010.

In a matchup of two young teams on the rise, the Jazz rebounded
from a deflating home loss to Dallas on Thursday and relied on
Millsap when the going got tough.

Millsap is riding a hot streak, averaging 22 points and shooting
over 60 percent the last seven games while facing some of the NBA’s
top power forwards.

Raja Bell’s jumper capped a 10-2 run to lift Utah’s lead to
70-58 and he then hit another jump shot to make it 76-62 for the
Jazz with 5:26 left in the third quarter.

Bell had 12 points and Earl Watson played the final 14 minutes
and finished with 10 points and seven assists.

Behind the playmaking of Rubio, the Timberwolves fought back
with a 13-2 run to tie the game at 84. Wayne Ellington opener the
fourth-quarter scoring with a 3-pointer to draw the Wolves even for
the first time since the first half.

Derrick Williams had 15 points and Wes Johnson scored 13, while
Darko Milicic, Ridnour and Ellington each had 10 points for the
Timberwolves, who return to Minnesota to play three of the next
four at home.

Notes: Key reserve Josh Howard missed his fourth straight game
with a strained left quadriceps. . Minnesota played without J.J.
Barea (sprained ankle) for the fifth time in six games and Michael
Beasley (right foot sprain) for the ninth consecutive contest.
Fellow Wolves Brad Miller, Martell Webster and Malcolm Lee have
missed the entire season. . Derrick Favors expressed surprise at
the $25,000 fine he received Saturday for throwing a ball into the
stands during Utah’s 94-91 loss Thursday night against Dallas. He
said he may appeal.

There is the quick update of the day.

Utah Jazz hold a two-point halftime edge over…

Published: Saturday, Jan. 21, 2012 8:13 p.m. MST

SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Jazz hold a two-point edge over the Minnesota Timberwolves in what’s been an entertaining and well-played first half Saturday night.

C.J. Miles scored 11 points and Paul Millsap had 10 for the Jazz, who went to the locker room with a 54-52 lead over the flashy Timberwolves.

Rookie Ricky Rubio — say that five times fast — hasn’t disappointed in his first showing at EnergySolutions Arena. The Spanish playmaker totaled nine points and seven assists — many of the highlight variety — in the opening half.

Derrick Williams and Wesley Johnson scored a combined 21 points, while power forward standout Kevin Love has been limited to just seven points and six rebounds.

Minnesota (7-8) has won three games in a row, including a last-second victory over the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday night.

The Jazz (9-5) are looking to get back to their winning ways after falling to Dallas 94-91 on Thursday.

Spain's Rubio turning heads in NBA debut…

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Whether driving the lane or the snow-fallen roads of frigid Minnesota, Timberwolves point guard Ricky Rubio navigates with a fearless abandonment that’s winning over fans and team mates alike in his debut season in the National Basketball Association (NBA).

Rubio has been equally adventurous on the court this season where his well-known passing wizardry is bringing rare entertainment value to the hard-luck Timberwolves franchise.

Basketball fans have lined up to watch the no-look passes and fast-break forays of the 6ft 4in Rubio who has helped Minnesota draw three sellout crowds this season, one more than all of last season, while jumping out to a surprising 7-8 start.

“He’s been better than I thought he was going to be,” said Timberwolves coach Rick Adelman.

“He has a real gift, he’s a great passer in the open court and sees the floor really well. Because of him we’ve really changed things and just put the ball in his hands.”

Rubio has had the ball in his hands since the beginning. Though a rookie by NBA standards, the Spanish prodigy has been a professional since signing with Spanish team Joventut Badalona at the age of 14.

His reputation soon swelled worldwide when he helped Spain win a silver medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, impressing in the final against gold medalists the U.S. and Kobe Bryant, LeBron James and Jason Kidd.

The Timberwolves selected Rubio as the No. 5 overall pick in the 2009 draft but he spent two years playing with Barcelona before reaching the NBA where anticipation had been building for his appearance.

Rubio has not been slowed by the extra attention or expectations. He started the season as a reserve, but quickly worked his way into the starting lineup with averages of 10.6 points per game and 8.1 assists heading into Saturday’s game against Utah.

“He takes everything in stride whether it’s the media, or missing shots or playing extremely well and getting the hype,” said Minnesota All Star forward Kevin Love. “He’s that cool and composed.”

Rubio’s poise under fire has been on display all season and he has emerged as one of the team’s best fourth-quarter players.

Despite missing his first 10 shots in a game against the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday, Rubio sunk a game-tying three-pointer with 20 seconds remaining that helped the Timberwolves earn a dramatic 101-98 victory.

“I believed in that shot. If not, no one can believe for you,” said Rubio, who has been spending extra time improving his jump shot which is a work in progress.

“(The fourth quarter) is when you have to control more of the game, and I feel much better then.”

Love hits 3 at buzzer, Timberwolves top Clippers

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Now that they are on their first three-game winning streak in almost two years, Kevin Love and the Minnesota Timberwolves are enjoying the ride.

Love hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer after Ricky Rubio‘s tying 3 with 20 seconds to play, lifting the Timberwolves to a pulsating 101-98 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday night.

The Timberwolves, coming off consecutive home wins over Sacramento and Detroit, have won three straight for the first time since a four-game stretch from Jan. 29 to Feb. 6, 2010. After that, they lost 29 of their final 31 games.

“In the last two games we’ve missed a ton of shots, but our defense has picked up and we’ve executed down the stretch and we’ve given ourselves a chance to win,” Love said. “So if we can continue to do that, eventually our offense will pick up and we’ll be able to win a lot of ballgames.”

Darko Milicic had 22 points and seven rebounds for Minnesota before fouling out with 1:01 left, and Love had 17 points and 14 rebounds.

Rubio, Minnesota’s rookie point guard, missed his first 10 field goal attempts before draining a clutch 3 from in front of the Clippers’ bench. He finished with nine points, six assists, six rebounds and three steals.

“He is unflappable. He missed every shot, and then he makes a big 3 to tie it,” coach Rick Adelman said. “The thing I like about him is that he’s a competitor. He doesn’t back down from anybody and he keeps an even keel. He doesn’t get too high or too low. He just plays. He’s been very good all year. He’s played in the fourth quarter of every game, even when he wasn’t starting.

“He’s got a real gift. He’s a great passer in the open court and he’s just a smart player. You’ve got to give him rope and let him go because he’s got that ability. And because of him, we’ve really kind of changed and simplified things we’ve done just to put the ball in his hands. He’s been better than I thought he was going to be.”

Chauncey Billups missed a driving layup against Rubio coming out of a timeout, and Love got the rebound before Minnesota called a timeout with 1.5 seconds on the clock.

Luke Ridnour inbounded the ball in front of the midcourt line to a wide-open Love, whose only option was to catch and shoot from a few feet beyond the arc. The ball hit nothing but net as the sellout crowd groaned.

“Coach set up a great play for us. How I was that open, I don’t really know, but I got a good look at it and I hit it,” Love said. “I tried to hold up my hands as soon as I shot it, because it felt great when it left my hands. I knew it was in. For us to do that, especially out here in L.A., it’s a big deal. The Clippers are a good team, and we just want to catch up and try to get back to .500.”

Love’s shot snapped the Clippers’ seven-game home winning streak.

“I got triple-screened and he made the shot,” Clippers center DeAndre Jordan said. “He’s a great player and he’s going to make shots. I have to try to keep a hand in his face and make it tough on him. We didn’t finish the game like we were supposed to. We let them hang around, and we got beat.”

Mo Williams scored 21 of his 25 points off the bench in the first half for the Clippers before getting ejected midway through the fourth quarter. Blake Griffin had 21 points and 10 rebounds, and Billups finished with 20 points after getting into early foul trouble. Point guard Chris Paul missed his fourth straight game because of a left hamstring strain.

Williams received his second technical foul with 6:21 remaining, after he was called for fouling Rubio on a drive to the basket as Rubio lost his footing.

“I felt like it was a questionable call,” Williams said. “I didn’t say anything. I just reacted to it — not in the direction of the referee, but towards our bench. I was surprised the technical was called, and it was at a crucial point in the game.”

The Timberwolves closed to 91-90 with 4:37 remaining after four consecutive free throws by Rubio. Billups responded with a 3-pointer and two free throws for a 98-94 Clippers lead.

Clippers forward Caron Butler, who shot a career-worst 1 for 12 on Wednesday night in a 91-89 win over Dallas after hyperextending his right knee the previous night at Utah, did not play against the Timberwolves.

“Obviously, they were a different team tonight because they didn’t have Chris or Caron,” Love said. “It was a big break for us when Mo got ejected because he was really on a roll.”

Michael Beasley missed his eighth straight game for the Timberwolves due to a sprained right foot. Reserve guard JJ Barea was back in Minnesota nursing a sprained ankle that also will keep him out of Saturday night’s game at Utah. Center Brad Miller and guard Martell Webster, both of whom resumed practice this week, also didn’t dress.

The Timberwolves, whose only other lead came after Milicic’s game-opening basket, opened the third quarter with a 12-1 run that sliced an 11-point deficit to 62-60.

Notes: Billups overtook Peja Stojakovic for fourth place in career 3-pointers (1,762). Ahead of him are Ray Allen, Reggie Miller and Jason Kidd. … An MRI taken Thursday on Butler’s knee revealed no structural damage. It was the same knee he had surgery on last January, which sidelined him for the rest of the season, but coach Vinny Del Negro said this injury was not related. … Adelman’s teams are 61-20 against the Clippers, his best mark against any club.

Statistics mirror Minnesota Timberwolves'…

The Timberwolves’ improving defense is beginning to show up in key categories in NBA team statistics.

The Wolves (6-8) finished the 2010-11 season last in points allowed and field-goal percentage defense in the fourth quarter. Defensive breakdowns in the fourth quarter contributed to their finishing with the league’s worst record at 17-65, and the Wolves allowed an average of 26.1 points and 46.9 percent shooting.

After the Wolves’ recent 3-1 stretch, the team ranks fourth in the league in opponents’ shooting percentage (39.9 percent) in the fourth quarter and eighth in points allowed (22.5).

“This team didn’t defend very well the last couple of years,” Wolves coach Rick Adelman said. “It was easy to get their attention that things had to improve.”

The Wolves, who allowed the most points in the league last season (107.7), rank 11th (92.5) heading into tonight’s game in Los Angeles against the Clippers.

All-star voting

Ricky Rubio is third among Western Conference guards and Kevin Love is fifth among conference forwards in the most recent fan voting results for the Feb. 26 NBA All-Star Game in Orlando, Fla.

Rubio, averaging 10.7 points and 8.3 assists, has received 248,423 votes. He trails Kobe Bryant (1,110,379) of the Los Angeles Lakers and Chris Paul (835,026) of the Los Angeles Clippers.

Love, averaging 25.2 points and 14.2 rebounds, has received 232,656 votes. Love, who played in the 2011 All-Star Game in Los Angeles, trails Oklahoma

City’s Kevin Durant (973,152), Blake Griffin (619,913) of the Clippers, Dallas’ Dirk Nowitzki (354,434) and Pau Gasol (327,596) of the Lakers.

Injury update

Wolves forward Michael Beasley, out since Jan. 6 because of a right mid-foot sprain, is not on the team’s two-game road trip.

Adelman said Beasley is out indefinitely. Beasley is going through an extensive rehab program and has been doing some light running.

Martell Webster (back) and Brad Miller (knee) accompanied the team, but Adelman said he was uncertain if either would play tonight or Saturday night in Utah. Both have been cleared to practice but have remained on the inactive list.

“Any time you make a
lineup change, you’re not going to get instant gratification out of
it. I don’t think there’s any miracle answers or miracle schemes.
What we’re looking at is different combinations and what works. I
thought Body (Wallace) played well (at Houston). I thought he did a
very, very good job, when you look at three blocks and four rebounds
in the minutes he played. We’re going to go with it for a little bit
and we’ll continue to evaluate it.” – Lawrence Frank, on
Wallace’s insertion into the starting lineup before last night’s
